John Piper Swears During Sermon!

When I first heard this sermon I was going to state how much of a Godly man John Piper is. Then I heard him swear. Instantly I lost my sanctification and dropped to my knees and repented for thinking those thoughts about John Piper and for hearing such foul language. I see his message, which started out great, was one that I could not even finish as it was so offensive because of its language! This is proof of the infection of the emerging emergents that are out there swearing in every sermon they do! We can thank Mark Driscoll and Tony Jones for influencing once godly men like John Piper and leading them to lose their sanctification.

Now, before you worry, I confessed for an hour per letter in that four letter word and now I am pure again.

(Oh crap! I just listened to the sermon again as I tried to post it to make sure it works… now I need go and repent again!)

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God,

 I. Todyaso

Having listened to John Piper I am not aware of any swearing. If the word “crap” is being referred to then I see nothing amiss. It is a standard, justifiable word that gives deep expression to something that is both wasteful and offensive. Next we shall be informed that “bastard” is a swear word, that God swears (Heb.12.8). As for Piper himself. This man plays to an audience, gives them what they want. And when his time is up he shall depart to his place, along with the rich man in torments. Piper’s come and go as the Martin Lloyd Jone’s and Spurgeon’s do, of each generation.

Alan, I go to Bethlehem Baptist church. John Piper is my pastor. I can tell you first hand that this man preaches truth that is completely out of scripture. He is no performer. He is preaching truth like any other God-ordained pastor, and people just want to listen to him. He lives an extremely modest lifestyle. Don’t hate on a pastor when you don’t know anything about him.

    Tyler,

I will be doing a study on “biblical” stoning and that it is still approved of in the NT. If you notice is it in the Levitical Law and that it is reference numerous times in the NT. Because of this I believe it is a “Christian” practise that is being ignore and through true revival need be reinstated as the Truth it is. It would be a great tool in our Truth War arsenal.

While I do agree that Mark Driscoll is in need of some spiritual transformation, I believe he is a believer. His foul language is something that does draw away from his sermon. However, Piper is in no way implicated in this video. “Crap” is a word about junk, or bodily excretions. And, in case anyone wonders how a “godly” man could discuss these things in the pulpit, please turn in your bibles to 2 Kings 18:27 and Isaiah 36:12. Discussing bodily functions and things that are considered “inappropriate” to our human senses occurs in Scripture when God is trying to get His point across to His people or His ministers are trying to show just how bad off the Lord’s people are

He is a performer upon a stage. Piper is no more than a novelty act within Christendom. To one audience he is free will, to another bondage of the will. Spurgeon was the finest example of how to face one way and then the other, a man who preached Sandemanianism, whilst proclaiming to be a Calvinist, a man that could stand along side Charles Darwin, promote origin of the species, whilst confessing to be reformed, a man who claimed justification by faith whilst promoting Quaker inner light justification.

Your comments on that one word are way over the top. In the UK ‘crap’ isn’t a swear word to most people. To say damn is a swear word in the UK but not in many parts of America. Actually the apostle Paul uses a similar word when he says “I counted all things as crap (slang Greek word for cow manure) compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ…” I don’t like bad language and Christians often use it without thinking, but in defense of Piper I think he is absolutely right in this case.

You need to be more careful in your language. I mean you sound like an Emergent who cares little about the crap… errr the things you say that could offend American Christians.

You must realize we Americans set the standard of Holiness and Bible interpretation.

So, Paul go and wash your mouth out with some Limey soap and don’t blame your foul language on the Greeks!

      1. where is your Biblical basis behind the word “crap” being a curse word? I would like to see that verse.
      2. Not all American Christians, in fact, i would say MOST American Christians do not consider “crap” to be a curse word. I certainly do not.
      3. We Americans in no way set the standard of Holiness or Biblical interpretation. That is completely untrue. Christ sets the standard of Holiness, to say that as Americans we do is prideful, and leads people to believe we think we are more holy than others which again is not only prideful but a lie, a horrible lie at that.
      4. If we as Americans did set the standard for Holiness and Biblical interpretation I would be worried because a lot of the American church has gotten so far away from the true gospel and true following of Christ that we would be responsible for the false teaching of countless lives.

    Mike,

I just left my closet and regained my sanctification after reading your comments. Though Luther often used the “S” word, Since Mark Driscoll used it, it is no longer sanctified.

Now, the sermon in question is the one that in the Youtube player in this post. It seemed obvious to me, yet I guess if you are a Driscollian it may be confusing to you whether what we consider to be swearing is or not.

My prayers are with you as you trust in our GIFT of Discernment.

Now, please observe the rule (which we have not posted yet) about using swear words. Rule one is that if it is in the bible you may use it. You may use though we will edit it if a Reformer or Puritans used the word. Unless Mark Driscoll used the word once. Then that word has lost it’s sanctification. Note if Steve Camp or Ken Silva or Chris Pajak uses the word they are exempt becuase they are ultra sanctified.

In regards to Dr. John MacArthur, I find him to be a wonderful God honoring man who is an amazing teacher and pastor. I would also consider my self a student of his as I have sat under his teaching at both Grace Community Church and at the Master’s college where he is President. K? Seems that Piper’s so called Calvinistic message was lost on you, dear. No one is saved by giving their lives to Christ. Such end up in hell, being external to the Vine (Jhn.15.1-5). Before a person can be saved they have to be first accounted as being in Christ, and that before the foundation of the world (Eph.1.4), and then to have, in time, Christ revealed in you (Gal.1.16), so that you cannot save yourself by anything that you think you can do. It is predestined that some shall be saved, and that some shall be damned, and that it is electing grace that makes the difference, and a message that Piper will not preach, of reprobation of some, of salvation of others, because he knows the cash will cease to come in, and his fancy life style disappear

I am not even sure where to begin here. You seem all over the map. One moment you are yelling at me I am not saved, then another affirming OUR doctrine of Lordship Salvation. Then you mockingly disgrace OUR great teacher and author guru John MacArthur with my own words.

Shame on you. It seems you are too blind to see anything without someone point it to you. I hope that if you have a dog it is potty trained and can let itself out as I am not sure what you might step in. If you do, maybe you better check your shoes.

I am glad to here Jesus is just the “Lord of your Life” as some people I know claim they died with Christ and no longer live. In fact they claim that they have not life but the Life of Christ inside them.

Can you imagine claiming Jesus lives inside you? What utter nonsense. It is OUR life and God is OUR Lord and the Blessed John MacArthur is our Apostle to lead us out of the manure pasture of un-enlightenment of the enlightenment. I am also glad to see that you understand what John MacArthur teaches is all about doing the best of “your ability” and not leaning o Christ to live and have His being in you to do His Will and Purpose. The last thing we need is to have Christianity be about Jesus and to lose sight that it is all about me and my salvation. Right?

Now the one thing you are lacking though is discernment. Sadly many who follow John MacArthur miss what the Truth War is about. We are to protect Jesus and the Truth of OUR doctrines.

Now aside from all that, YOUR snide and mocker of John MacArthur makes me see that you must be lying. A true follower of John MacArthur would never attack someone else to protect his own reputation. They are the kindest gentlest people and that church has a ever growing reputation of this. In fact John MacArthur would not make any wide generalizations of anyone. We know that the people tend to be like the Master they follow.

Now, you are wasting my time in attack me, though my holiness has risen more by your persecution. I hope only that you grow in “your ability” and earnestly receive the same Grace to you as we give to all people (as long as they agree with us and are saved).

I’ve heard Mark Driscoll is “the cussing pastor” and wanted to see what I could learn about him and that’s how I found this discussion. I agree that the “c” word is not profanity. Whoever says it is has an imprecise understanding of the English language. But it does fit into the category of crude, base, offensive, impolite and off-color language.

The Bible has many things to say about the tongue, words and language in general. Perverse speech is vulgar. I’m not surprised by all the comments here considering how the Church today seems to think it is acceptable to mirror the fallen world around us with little to no remorse. It is actually heart-breaking to see how much my country has changed in the last 50 years not to mention the Church.

Discretion is still a virtue appreciated by God whether by His people or not. As for the scripture references above that supposedly sanction foul language, I would say consult Paul’s epistles on the practical application of Biblical truth. I would also say that in moving scripture from one language and culture to another, we don’t always capture the correct sense expression. For example, if I called my mother “Woman”, it would sound disrespectful in our culture. But Jesus called Mary “Woman” (John 19:26b) in our English translations, but it wasn’t a disrespectful address at all. Also, certain words in each culture are considered vulgar. For example, in a medical context, a doctor doesn’t typically use vulgar terms but medical terms to get his point across. Decency, politeness and using good manners are important. If you don’t agree, check I Cor. 13:5a before the next time you insist that God is love and we should love as He does.

Yes, we are all sinners by nature, but that’s the fallen nature. If the Spirit of God lives within you, you have a new nature as well. Paul talks about putting off “the old man” and “putting on the new”. This is what a Biblical worldview and a close, personal relationship with Jesus Christ is all about as well as THE living religion. Yes, Christianity is a religion, but it is the only LIVING one. God does expect us to regularly ingest scripture, pray, witness, give and even fast (Hmm?!).

Jesus prayed that we would be one (John 17:21-23), but that can only happen when we come to an agreement about controversial things as well as sin. Jesus’ solution for the “eating meat offered to idols” controversy was pretty clear. Stop eating the meat…probably because it offended other Christians and caused division among believers. (See Rev. 2:20; Prov. 6:16-19) Fight among ourselves accomplishes Satan’s goals and distracts us from spreading the gospel and edifying the saints.

I hope you all consider these things very carefully. Selah.

  60. I scanned a few of the comments in this thread, and have concluded it is fairly useless. I’ll just say that discretion is a good quality that is sadly missing in our society. I can’t explain away the references in scripture, but I know you can’t go wrong apply good character in your speech. There is no law against the fruit(s) of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22,23). Too often we look for excuses to do what WE want to do.
